You wave Lizzy off in the carriage, where her hem remains unmuddied and her fine eyes unbrightened by exercise. She sees Jane, but must return home the same day with the carriage. Little do you realise that you have inadvertently deprived Mr Darcy of furthering his acquaintance with your second daughter.

Mr Darcy’s passions are never roused by Elizabeth Bennet again. He catches Jane’s cold, succumbs to a fever and ever after is known in Meryton as “that poor, sickly Mr Darcy, God rest his soul”.
