You wave Lizzy off in her stout boots. “Give my love to Jane,” you say. “Tell her I hope that Mr Bingley is not put off by her runny nose and constant sneezing, and that I expect a proposal of marriage by this evening.”

Lizzy laughs, forgets to look where she is going and falls headlong into a deep puddle. She gets to her feet, wipes most of the mud from her face, wrings water from her skirt and, with a shrug, continues on her way.

​

You watch her disappear into the distance, reassured that she will reach her destination safely. She looks such a fright that no man in his right mind would ever speak to her.
